Dr. Harty graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He received his general surgery and urology training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon completion of his residency, he joined the faculty of the division of urology at the University of Louisville, where he remained for twenty-four years. He was the acting chief of urology for his last five years at the University. He retired from the University and joined Urology Surgical Associates in 2001.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgery in Ireland and of the American College of Surgeons. He is past president of the Louisville Surgical Society and the Kentucky Urologic Society. He is certified by the American Board of Urology and is licensed in Kentucky and Indiana. Dr. Harty has authored more than 70 articles and book chapters.

In addition to general urology, Dr. Harty is particularly interested in urologic cancers and urinary stone disease.
